Review: LORAC Alter Ego Lipstick in "Free Spirit"

LORAC Alter Ego Lipstick in "Free Spirit"

It is officially Fall for me, the weather is cooler, the leaves are starting to change, and matte lips are a must! With that in mind, today I have to review for you guys one of the most loved matte lipstick formulas, the LORAC Alter Ego Lipstick in "Free Spirit".

The LORAC Alter Ego Lipsticks retail for $16 (0.12 oz) and are available in-store and online at Ulta, Kohls, and the LORAC Website. Through the rest of September, these lipsticks are on sale for only $8 at Ulta!

Let's get in to the review!

LORAC claims these lipsticks will:

"...coat your lips in highly-pigmented color with an opaque, matte finish."

Free Spirit is a deep but bright cool-toned plummy purple. This color would suit every skin tone, particularly if you have brown hair. The color is darker and more purple than MAC's "Up the Amp", lighter and more purple than Wet n Wild's "Ravin Raisin".

Purples have the tendency to make your teeth look more yellow. I did not find this color to make my teeth look more yellow, but it is something to be aware of. This color will look amazing for the Fall if you've been looking for a purple but need it to be wearable.

These lipsticks come in a nice sturdy dark grey lipstick tube with the bottom colored to coordinate the color of the lipstick. They're easy to store and to identify which color you want without having to open up each lipstick.

The formula.

This color applies very evenly to the lips, but the color does need to be built up with a few swipes. The color is very opaque, so if you want a more natural looking lip, this is not the lipstick for you. It is a very intense pop of color.

The finish is completely matte, not sheen or shine. The texture of these lipsticks is similar to that of the Rimmel London Lasting Finish Matte Lipsticks and the Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipsticks.

They have a silicone feeling formula to them which makes them easy to apply without tugging at the lips. However, this particular formula is on the thicker side, so if you have dry or mature lips, this may not be the formula for you.

The Alter Ego Lipsticks also have a pleasant light vanilla scent to them. So if you are sensitive to scents or fragrances, be aware the scent does linger.

Longevity.

With applying a few layers of the lipstick, the color lasted over 8 and a half hours, even with light eating and drinking, before starting to fade slightly on the inner parts of my lips. The color wore down evenly, there was no obvious ring of color left around the outer parts of my lips.

One thing I really loved about this formula was that even though it is creamy and opaque, unlike some lipsticks or liquid lipsticks, the color did not transfer or bleed outside my lip line. The color stays in place and at full opacity all day!

Overall, this particular shade is creamy, very long-wearing, and is the perfect wearable purple shade for Fall! However, because of the thicker formula and texture, if you have dry or mature lips, this may not be the most flattering lipstick formula to wear. If you love a flat looking matte lipstick, you need to check out the Alter Ego Lipsticks!
